Bring on the Baby Showers – Games and Gifts!

Once an American tradition, it seems us Brits aren’t far behind and the Baby shower is becoming increasingly popular. It also seems that it is not just an event for the expectant mums of the world, as now dads are starting to take part in the party.

So where do we start? What do we do? And who plans it?

Well we are here to help with some ideas for games and gifts to make your expectant mum’s baby shower something creative and full of giggles.

We get started with the etiquette of baby showers, and who should actually be throwing them for mum to be. Tradition would suggest that anyone but the expectant couple and preferably not a relative to avoid it looking like the family is asking for presents. I would suggest ignoring tradition on this occasion and anyone who wishes to throw mum to be a party should do so… All expectant mums should be spoilt.

Now for the fun part of the planning…..The GAMES!

We are all kids at heart and baby shower games (although a bit tongue in cheek) are all funny and light hearted. Here are a few of my favourites.

Delectable Dirty Nappies

Though completely harmless, this may not be for the squeamish. You need to buy a variety of chocolate, e.g. Mars bars, Galaxy, Flake, Milk way… As many varieties as you like but try to get differing chocolate all will become apparent.

Before the party, you need to melt the chocolates down in the microwave one by one (Be sure not to leave the chocolate in there too long as it will burn quickly). Number some nappies, so if you have six different chocolates you need six nappies. Then smear a chocolate bar in each nappy. As you will probably have guessed by now, the aim of the game is to sniff the ‘dirty’ nappy and guess what chocolate the ‘poo’ is.

Play Doh Babies

The challenge is to set… 5 minutes to sculpt a baby out of play doh…… GO! Mum is judge of this creative game, and you can all have a giggle at each other as you attempt to sculpt a baby. This is a fun light hearted game that everyone can play, even those with a squeamish disposition. Good luck on this challenge.

Bobbing for Nipples

This is a tongue in cheek game that is great fun (and a hit with the dads if they are joining the party). You need a paddling pool and some bottle nipples (teats). The aim of the game is similar to bobbing for apples. You have your hands behind your back and you take turns getting the nipples out with your teeth. This game can be done in a number of ways, either by timing, or competing against another. Either way this one is a giggle that everyone seems to enjoy.

So they are just a few games that you can play, of course they are many more but those are my favourites.

Remember the Gift

You can’t turn up to a party without a little something for mum or baby. I always struggle with this, as you never know what they already have, and you can ask the ‘What do you need?’ question, but then its not a surprise when mum opens her present. So why not step away from the presents they need (I always say that’s what the grandparents enjoy buying anyway)and try something special, something different. A little keepsake, a photo frame maybe? Or a money box for baby?

Whatever you decide, please look at some of the ideas in the Angel Gifts shop. We strive to offer a wide range of beautiful baby gifts.

Have a wonderful shower, hope these ideas have helped!

What’s Hot for 2013 in the baby boy names stakes?

  • Jagger – he might have been a rocker, but this name is at the top of the charts for boys in 2013.
  • Lincoln – It’s a place and surname of an American president, but it’s also a very modern name for your little one.
  • Hawkins – Unusual and strong sounding.
  • Knox – Another strong name that is masculine but yet cool.
  • Jamison – A modern twist on James and pretty hip as a boys name.

  • Mason – Solid and suitable for either boys or girls, plus we like it.
  • Lucas or Lukas – whichever way you spell it it’s a nice name for a boy.
  • Dominic – Making a comeback is this classic name, it just never seems to go far out of fashion.
  • Jaden – Faintly reminiscent of the orient and a perfectly good name for your baby boy.
  • Harper – The Beckhams called one of their children Harper Seven, but we prefer simply Harper for a boy.
  • Brooks – This name evokes memories of babbling water and streams, great for eco friendly parents to name their son.
  • Zuma – Good enough for Gwen Stefani‘s son so it’s good enough for any little boy.
  • Ryker – Are you a star trek fan? Then why not name your baby boy after Commander Ryker who was played by actor Jonathan Frakes in Star Trek – The Next Generation.
  • Thorn – even the cutest little boy can have a name like this, and they aren’t always prickly!
  • Brantley or Brentley – The meaning of Brantley is proud in English, Brentley is just a slight alteration of the spelling and just as nice.
  • Finn or Finlay – A light and pleasant name for any little boy, although can also be used for a little girl.

Naming a baby is never easy and with so many to choose from you can get overwhelmed by the choices.

Take your time and think about your baby growing up, imagining him as a teenager for example and see if you still like the names you have short listed. You could opt for a more traditional name or wait and see what your baby boy looks like before deciding.

Pink Teddy Bear Pictures

Teddies are awesome and all babies love them. They exist in all types of forms. There are big ones, small ones, soft and cuddly ones, ornaments, door stops, key rings, and the list goes on and on.

Pink teddy bears are very traditional gifts for a baby girl. You can never go wrong buying a newborn baby girl a teddy bear.

My baby daughter is huge fan of her pink bears. She has a couple of favourites but still loves them all. I decided to do a post featuring 6 very cute pink teddy bear pictures.

Our first pink bear is soft and silky with a big pink bow.

This bear is not for babies although babies would definitely enjoy admiring and touching it. This is actually a tiny teddy bear brooch from Etsy.

Next comes this pink door stop teddy bear. He sits proudly holding a little girls bedroom door open. This bear is beautiful and also heavy, being a door stop! It’s an important job.

This girls teddy bear is a collectable Beanie Bear. I love the gorgeous rich dark pink colour of his fur, very pretty.

Of course it wouldn’t be a complete list of pink teddy bear pictures without featuring a Care Bear. Does anyone else remember them? Children of the 80s definitely should!

And finally is our Button Corner bear holding his treasured pink blanket. He is very soft and cute.

Whichever teddy bear you buy as a baby gift, it is sure to be much loved by the receiver. In the case of newborn babies perhaps not right away because they are so tiny, but they will definitely like their bears as they get older.

3. Olive – a gorgeous name, popular again after a break of a few years.

20. Zahara – There are not a lot of names beginning with Z, so any that do are unusual and exotic sounding.

Whichever name you choose, be mindful that your baby girl will live with it for a long time. Altering the spelling of a name can make it more exotic and unusual, but can lead to difficulties for others and in later in life.

You don’t always have to go for a modern name, there are many older baby girl names that are still fashionable and always will be – such as Elizabeth, Jennifer, Helen, Sophie and Lucy.
